Ilagan City has 23 confirmed waterfalls with 39 others reported by local barangay heads. The most famous among these is the Maria Cristina Falls, which was harnessed by the National Power Corporation in the 1950s. The falls generate electricity to power not just the City of Iligan but almost all of the Island of Mindanao.

In the 50s and early 60s, Iligan City became the “Pittsburgh of the South” after several manufacturing plants decided to invest in the locality. A Steel plant, coco oil mill plant, a flour mill, cement factories, a gas processing plant, and a chemical plant are just a few of the factories that were built during this time. These plants gave the city its lifeblood and are considered the main source of its financial stability. These factories are also open to educational tours.

Aside from its many waterfalls, Iligan City is also the home of the famous Timoga Springs, where the Timoga swimming pools are located. These pools are known for their pristine, cool, and crystal clear waters. Free-flowing water flows through the pools, filling them up, before it flows out downstream to the Iligan Bay. There are picnic shacks, snack bars, cottages, as well as tables and chairs for the swimmers’ complete relaxation.

Tinago Falls

Tinago Falls, nestled in a deep ravine between Iligan City and Linamon, Lanao del Norte, is celebrated as one of the most stunning and iconic waterfalls in Mindanao. True to its name (Tinago means “hidden”), this breathtaking 240-foot cascade plunges beautifully into a calm, deep turquoise blue lagoon

Sikyop Underground River Adventure

With its long list of majestic waterfalls, Iligan City is undeniably a nature lover’s daydream, but an underground river adds even more to the unrivaled thrills it can guarantee.  Welcome to Sikyop Adventure in Sitio Lawlawon, Barangay Rogongon! The Sikyop Agriculture Cooperative manages it, and it features underground river trekking, tree-top viewing, and a visit to Pagangon Falls. The name “Sikyop” is a Higaonon term for “hidden paradise” and is located around 32 kilometers east of Iligan City proper through Sta. Filomena and Rogongon Road. 

Maria Cristina Falls

Maria Cristina Falls is the crown jewel of Iligan City’s industrial and natural heritage, standing at a towering 321.5 feet (98 meters). Famously dubbed the “Twin Falls” due to a massive boulder that splits its massive cascade, it functions as the primary power source for Northern Mindanao, harnessed by the Agus VI Hydroelectric Plant.
