Batanes

Batanes

Dreaming of stepping into a postcard? Batanes is the perfect destination to visit.

Surrounded by dramatic rolling-hill landscapes, unspoiled beaches, and rich Ivatan culture, Batanes is considered the northernmost paradise in the Philippines.

It might be the smallest province in the country, but it offers unique experiences and unforgettable adventures for tourists.

Chavayan Stone House Village

Tucked along the coastline of Sabtang Island, Chavayan Village stands as one of the Batanes’ most treasured cultural gems, where heritage, simplicity, and tradition have been beautifully preserved over time.  This village is home to traditional Ivatan stone houses made of limestone and coral, which tell the stories of the community’s resilience. A visit to Batanes would be incomplete without immersing one’s self in the charm of this magnificent place.

Visiting Chavayan Village is even more memorable with its immersive cultural experience. Visitors can rent and wear traditional Ivatan attire while strolling through the narrow streets and taking photographs against Batanes breathtaking landscapes.

Basco Lighthouse

A stunning 360-degree view of the West Philippine Sea, Mt. Iraya, and the rugged coastlines awaits you at the iconic 66-feet-tall Basco Lighthouse that sits atop the Naidi Hills in Barangay San Antonio. The statuesque structure served as a significant landmark in Batanes’ capital, standing as an iconic coastal watchtower and cultural symbol of the region’s beauty and resilience.

If watching the sunrise and sunset is your love language, you cannot miss a visit to Basco Lighthouse. Visitors can climb the lighthouse’s view deck to enjoy a picture-perfect spot to watch the sun rise and set over the island, making it an ideal backdrop for your next Instagram posts.

Vunung Festival

Experience the Ivatan culture of sharing at the Vunung Festival, a celebration of the Province of Batanes’ founding anniversary in June. ‘Vunung’ refers to the Ivatan tradition of meal sharing at social gatherings such as ‘paychakuvutan’ (weddings), ‘paymuhan’ (yam planting), ‘payvahayan’ (house building), ‘pakavusan’ (culminating prayer event for a dead person), and other community celebrations.

Throughout the festivities, visitors can immerse themselves in bayanihan, sharing meals, traditional dances, arts-and-crafts exhibits, and culinary showcases, all of which embody Ivatan culture.
