Nestled in the middle of the archipelago, this human heart-shaped island province is the Butterfly Capital of the Philippines as well as its geodetic center. 

Malbog Sulfur Spring,  Buenavista

Famous for its natural sulfur spring, the Malbog Sulfur Spring is a therapeutic destination located on the edge of Mt. Malindig. It is a famous local picnic attraction and its sulfuric waters are believed to aid with skin maladies. In the 1900s, there was even a Marinduque pharmacist who was known to have bottled small amounts of the spring water and sold it in Manila as medicine for stomach problems.

Moriones 

One of the most iconic celebrations in the Philippines, the Moriones Lenten Rites, or the Moryonan is held during Holy Week. The event sees locals dressed in elaborate costumes and masks representing Roman soldiers, or centurions, from the Bible. Called ‘moriones,’ the costumed folk parade around Marinduque depicting Christ’s Passion. It then culminates in the reenactment of the beheading of Longinus, the soldier who pierced the side of Christ with a spear. The towns of Boac, Mogpog, and Gasan are virtually converted into huge stages depicting the story of Longinus.

Boac Heritage Town

Boac Heritage Town is the historic heart of Marinduque, where centuries-old architecture, rich traditions, and local flavors come together. Dominating the town skyline is the majestic Boac Cathedral, a 1792 fortress church and an Important Cultural Property that has stood witness to the province’s history. Nearby, the National Museum of Marinduque showcases exhibits on the island’s heritage, archaeology, and the famous Moriones tradition.

A stroll through the town reveals well-preserved heritage houses that reflect Spanish-era influences and the enduring charm of old Boac. Among these is Casa de Don Emilio, a beautifully restored ancestral home where visitors can savor authentic Marinduque dishes and local delicacies in a setting that captures the elegance of a bygone era.
